The Palermos’ manor farm (better known as Vittorio’s Manor Farm, since it has kept the original owners’ name) is undoubtedly the biggest producer of mushrooms in this area, able to supply all the markets in Southern Italy.
The family started to cultivate cardoncelli – spontaneous mushrooms typical of this area -, pleurotus and champignons in the late 1970s. Nowadays, the production has grown such that it can satisfy a big share of the Southern Italy market, thanks to Otello Palermo’s innovative and business spirit. Actually, he may be considered as a pioneer of mushroom cultivation in a place traditionally devoted to olive trees and grapevines cultivation.
A last peculiarity: the firm is headquartered inside the ancient Vittorio’s fortified manor house, where there are still a round plan tower and a two-floor building with the Vergara family’s coat of arms clearly visible on it.
