Although not many years have passed since its appearance in the national and international market, Puglia has very deep and old enological traditions. With an enormous part of its territory dedicated to vineyards, it is among the regions that produce the most wine in Italy. There are 28 production areas of DOC and 4 of DOCG. Among these outstanding achievements, in Salento alone, is Primitivo di Manduria DOCG. It is a well liked wine - vinted purely (100% Primitivo), and produced in an area between the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi whose hub is the city of Manduria.
In 2011 another DOC from Salento was recognized: Negroamaro di Terra d’Otranto. Probably the varietal that characterizes Salento more than any other, Negroamaro is vinted purely (for both reds and rosès), or in blends, typically with Malvasia Nera di Lecce, to produce Alezio doc, Brindisi doc, Copertino doc, Leverano doc, Nardò doc, Salice doc, and others.
In recent years, different local producers have successfully made themselves noted for white wines as well, generally considered provenance of other regions. The most common varietal (Verdeca), once used only as a base for sweet wines or to blend with other whites, has come into its own, contributing – especially when vinted pure – to the creation of white wines for more demanding palates.
To anyone wishing to organize such an outing, combining in any form art, history, culture, wine and gastronomy, we recommend: take the road from Manduria to Copertino, and on the way pass through Salice and Leverano.
